Indianapolis, IN, September 8, 2005. Mary Lind of Portland, Oregon, was appointed Associate Director of Indianapolis Peace House. Her duties will begin October 1.
Mary Lind comes to the position of Associate Director with a wonderful background in conflict transformation. She has experience selecting and accompanying American students to Zimbabwe to study social change, developing and teaching courses related to Global Inequities and Intercultural Dialogue, working with college students as instructor and program manager, and teaching as an adjunct professor in the School of Conflict Resolution at Portland State University.
Ms. Lind holds a Master of Science in Education with emphasis on Conflict Resolution. Her thesis, “From Conflict to Transformation: A Proposal for the Use of Mediation and Dialogue in the Multicultural College Classroom,” combines the attributes sought in the Associate Director. “Mary’s rigorous academic training, her passion for action in a world of haves and have-nots, her considerable experience in student recruitment, her eight year experience as a faculty member in conflict transformation, and her overseas experience all combine into an ideal candidate,” says Erwin Boschmann, the CEO of Indianapolis Peace House.
An arm of the Lilly Endowment-funded Plowshares collaborative between Earlham, Goshen, and Manchester colleges, Indianapolis Peace House, www.indypeacehouse.org, is a one-semester off-campus conflict resolution experience for students from any college or university. Students live communally in the residence, take two courses, and do a six-credit internship at a mutually agreeable site with all credits going back to the home institution.
Ms. Lind says that “when I came across the Peace House Associate Director opening, I felt I was reading about my ideal job. I want to be working with college students immersed in an innovative program involving dynamic group experiences, service-learning, strong community connections, exciting coursework, and content related to peace and social justice. I believe that learning and action must go hand in hand in order to effect change in our communities, our world, and in ourselves. I resonate with the contributions of educational theorist/activist Paulo Freire who believes change rests on a liberating education which empowers learners in on-going practice of reflection and action.”
