Students light candles at a campus peace vigil.

A peace that comes from fear and not from the heart is the opposite of peace.

Plowshares to revise curriculum guide

October 23, 2006

When the last edition of Peace & World Security Studies was published in 1994, the end of the Cold War was big news and peace studies programs were retooling their objectives to reflect a new world order with many new independent states and only one super power.

Today peace and conflict studies programs are retooling again, this time to respond to a world of shifting powers, non-state players, and threats of terrorism. The Plowshares Peace Studies Collaborative in Indiana continues the work of the Five Colleges Program in Massachusetts to produce the 7th edition of Peace & World Security Studies: A Curriculum Guide that aids colleges and universities in building peace and security studies programs and designing new courses.

The curriculum guide offers articles on the current state of peace and security studies and course syllabi on more than a dozen topics. Some 380 colleges and universities in the United States teach at least one course in conflict studies, up 30 percent in five years.

The curriculum guide is a valuable tool for new and older programs. The print volume will debut in 2008.
