Internship Opportunities with our Community Partners

Indianapolis Peace Institute Partners

This list will provide you with some ideas regarding our partners and the internships they offer. Indianapolis Peace Institute is constantly connecting with new organizations in Indianapolis and many more opportunities are available than the ones listed here.  Our first priority in connecting students with internship sites is to determine the student’s interest – be it to work directly with clients, to write articles, or to explore non-profit management tasks such as event planning.  Once we know your area of interest, we can generate a more focused list of options for your internship.

Children's Bureau, Inc.Boner Center
  • Mission: to respond creatively to the needs of the people of Indianapolis encouraging them to recognize strengths as they move toward self-reliance and an improved quality of life.
  • Opportunities: General Social Services including opportunities to work in elder care, children and youth services, employment assistance, financial education and more
  • Past interns worked on: senior socialization activities
Children's Bureau, Inc.Children's Bureau, Inc.
  • Mission: to offer help and hope to Indiana children in need
  • Opportunities: child abuse prevention and response, supervised visit program, general social services for families, education about abuse, teen parenting, etc.
  • Past interns worked on: supervised visits between children in foster care and their parents
Children's Museum of IndianapolisChildren's Museum of Indianapolis
  • Mission: to create extraordinary learning experiences that have the power to transform the lives of children and families. 
  • Opportunities in: community initiatives, educational programs, graphic design, exhibit research, gallery interpretation, marketing, events and more.
  • Past interns worked on: science outreach program
Children's Theatre Institute Children's Theatre Institute
  • Mission: to educate and inspire young people through theatre arts
  • Opportunities: theater, kids, non-profit management and outreach
  • Past interns worked on: running a summer children’s theater program, including strategies to open theater up to people of all income levels
Habitat for HumanityConcord Neighborhood Center
  • Mission: The Concord Neighborhood Center offers south-side Indianapolis families and individuals of all ages a one-stop source for social services, children’s programs, educational opportunities, recreational activities and cooperative programs with other agencies.
  • Past interns worked on: HIV education, outreach, and prevention
Habitat for HumanityExodus Refugee/Immigration, Inc.
  • Mission: Exodus supports the victims of persecution, injustice, and war, as they rebuild their lives and regain basic human rights and needs.
  • Exodus empowers refugees by providing comprehensive case management, employment services, and financial assistance and by connecting clients with local resources while promoting independence.
  • Past interns worked on: Refugee assistance duringthe first 6 months in the US
Habitat for HumanityHabitat for Humanity - Indianapolis
  • Mission: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis joins with low-income families and other community partners to provide home ownership opportunities and build communities of hope as an expression of God's love.
  • Opportunities: marketing, construction, volunteer coordination, support to families
  • Past interns worked on: building houses and volunteer coordination
Indiana Black ExpoHorizon House
  • Mission: to be an advocate for homeless neighbors and to provide personalized services that empower them to permanently end their homelessness.
  • Past interns worked on: Employment and support services for homeless
Indiana Black ExpoIndiana Black Expo
  • Mission: to be an effective voice and vehicle for the social and economic advancement of African-Americans.
  • Opportunities: Youth, poverty, entrepreneurship, employment, health education, event planning, programming, fund development
  • Past interns worked in: Mentoring high school students and teaching video and television production.
Indiana Legal ServicesIndiana Legal Services
  • Mission:  to use our resources to provide poor people with a wide variety of aggressive, quality legal services which will effectively help them to gain equal access to the courts; empower them to control their lives; and impact on the major causes and effects of poverty. ILS helps clients who are faced with legal problems that harm their ability to have such basics as food, shelter, income, medical care or personal safety.
  • Past interns worked in: Researching and preparing pro-bono legal cases
Indiana State MuseumIndiana State Museum
  • Mission: to interpret and present material evidence of Indiana’s cultural and natural history in a context that encourages people to actively participate in discovering their world – as it was, as it is and as it can be.
  • Opportunities: marketing, events, graphic design, development, accounting, volunteer coordination, exhibit design
  • Past interns worked in: Research and development of African-American museum exhibit
Islamic Society of North AmericaIslamic Society of North America
  • Mission: ISNA is an association of Muslim organizations and individuals that provides a common platform for presenting Islam, supporting Muslim communities, developing educational, social and outreach programs and fostering good relations with other religious communities, and civic and service organizations.
  • Community development, interfaith and coalition building, leadership development, conflict resolution training, writing and editing,
  • Past interns worked on: Interfaith issues of peace and community relations
Noble of IndianaJulian Center
  • Mission: to contribute to a significant reduction in the incidence of violence against women and their children, to support survivors in healing, and to help break the intergenerational cycle of abuse.
  • Opportunities: domestic violence education, counseling, social work, elementary education
  • Past interns have worked on: Teaching assistant in Indianapolis Public School classroom for children ages 5-13 located in the shelter.
La Plaza, IndianapolisLa Plaza, Indianapolis
  • Mission: to serve, empower and integrate the Hispanic Latino community of Central Indiana
  • Opportunities: Health and social services, education, economic development, arts and culture, non-profit management, development, research, event planning
  • Past interns worked on: educating people about the Dream Act and other issues affecting the Latino population in Indianapolis
Peace Learning Center Mary Rigg Community Center
  • Mission: to help ease the struggle for many needy people who live in west Indianapolis
  • Social work, youth services, health education, computer training, HIV education and support, Senior services.
  • Past interns worked on: Social work practicum with neighborhood residents
Noble of IndianaNoble of Indiana
  • Mission: to inspire the community to recognize, embrace and include the contributions of individuals with disabilities and to help children with developmental delays and adults with developmental disabilities to pursue personally meaningful lives.
  • Opportunities: direct support services, teaching assistant, non-profit management, volunteer coordination, event planning, communications/PR, IT
  • Past interns worked on: non-profit management

  • Mission:  NUVO searches high and low to find the real news in local politics, culture and the arts — stuff the corporate guys won't even touch. Then we wrap it in a layer of in-your-face, no-BS attitude and serve it up (for free) at over 1,200 locations around town.
  • Opportunities: writing, researching, editing, non-profit management, marketing, graphic design
  • Past interns worked on:Social justice journalism and newspaper management
Organization for a New Eastside
  • Opportunities: community organizing, neighborhood revitalization, home buyer education, research and advocacy on housing and lending.
  • Past interns worked on: Developed a mural reflecting the peace and justice concerns of the Eastside community; grant-writing and general PR
Peace Learning CenterPeace Learning Center
  • Mission: toteach peacebuilding and communication skill to youth and adults. PLC establishes safe and common ways to deal with conflicts and differences.
  • Opportunities: conflict resolution education, youth services, diversity education
Peace Learning Center Prevent Blindness
  • Mission: to advance vision health and wellness with comprehensive education, screening, safety, and sight preservation research
  • Past interns have worked on:Vision screening for low-income residents of Indianapolis and migrant farm families.
