Program
Our summer program emphasizes the internship (for credit or not for credit) and is enhanced by the opportunity to participate in community-building activities with other college students.
Internships
The Indianapolis Peace Institute (IPI) Associate Director assists students in finding meaningful internship placements of 30-40 hours per week. Internships take place in organizations that work on peacebuilding. Such organizations offer multiple different opportunities that can be individually tailored, which makes the IPI program applicable to students from all majors and disciplines. For example, internships are available with lobbying organizations, political offices, grassroots peace groups, school-based peer mediation programs, state government agencies, and in the field of community development, domestic violence, inter-religious dialogue, environment, graphic design, public health and many other areas. Internships are unpaid.
Internships for credit
The Associate Director will help students fulfill any internship requirements their home school may have. Students who are doing their internship for credit are responsible for organizing that credit with their home institution, and for paying any fees the home institution may charge for those credits. IPI staff will talk directly with college finance offers and registrars about financial matters related to earning credits.
Costs and fees
- Program fees are $1100 for shared room, $1280 for a single
- Students are responsible for their own food costs and are encouraged to cook and eat with other members of the Peace House.
- Upon acceptance to the program, students will be asked to pay a $150 deposit. $50 of this deposit is non-refundable and will be used to cover the cleaning of the residence, breakage, and/or damages. $100 will be refunded upon successful completion of the program.
- You may take on part-time work after consultation with IPI staff, however, internship and community-living must remain the main focus of your time at the Institute
Programming
4-day orientation, including introduction to city and community life
1-day final workshop to prepare for life outside the House community
Guest Speaker Series (every other week) - Evening speakers will come to the house to engage in discussion about different peacebuilding issues in Indianapolis. These thought-provoking, interactive discussions usually last about one hour and students are required to attend as they provide an important part of the community-building experience. Attendance at weekly house meetings is also required. A major part of the program encourages the creation of a proactive community of young people interested in peacebuilding. This makes the house a thriving, interesting environment in which to live and work.
Professional Development – Workshops with career services professionals, who assist with resume development and job skill enhancement.
Applications
The application deadline is rolling, and applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students are encouraged to apply early as this allows for a better internship placement. Students who wish to do the program for credit will have precedence over those who do not wish to earn credit. Graduated seniors are welcome to apply, although students currently enrolled at a college will have precedence.
