Plowshares - A Peace Studies Collaborative of Earlham, Goshen and Manchester Colleges

Students light candles at a campus peace vigil.

Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater developments and greater riches and so on, so that children have very little time for their parents. Parents have very little time for each other, and in the home begins the disruption of peace of the world.

Collection Analysis: Peace Studies Commonly Held Titles

Print this page

The lists linked below are derived from a collection analysis of titles held by the libraries of the three Plowshares schools, Earlham College, Goshen College (including Mennonite Historical Library), and Manchester College, along with those of five other schools that also support peace studies programs: Bethel College, Eastern Mennonite University, Guilford College, Haverford College, and Juniata College. The analysis, created by OCLC’s Automated Collection Assessment and Analysis Service (ACAS) in October 2003, allowed us to compare our holdings with other libraries and determine the strengths and weaknesses of our collections. The following keywords were used to search the WorldCat database (an * indicates truncation):

These keywords were chosen in an attempt to encompass the interdisciplinary nature of peace studies. As a result, there may be some titles in the list that do not seem to fit. We have eliminated the most obvious of these, but have tried to err on the side of inclusion.

There was general consensus among the librarians at the three Plowshares schools that lists of commonly held titles might be of interest to peace studies scholars as well as librarians who develop peace studies collections. We decided that titles held by more than half of the libraries surveyed are most likely to provide a solid foundation for any peace studies program. Each list contains only those titles held by the number of libraries indicated. (Titles held by 5 libraries means 5 libraries, not 5 or more libraries.)
